A refresher for those Out to See the New Bond

11.20.2012

As many Bond films do, "Quantum of Solace" begins in dramatic fashion with an Italian car chase with him at the helm of the characterstic turbo Aston Martin. Rushing to flee a fleet of encroaching Alpha Romeos for what reason the audience doesn’t know, James Bond(Daniel Craig) eludes them presciently and sends two of their vehicles into impactful collisions. A similar action sequence takes effect in a boat chase scene in Haiti, which carries nostalgic significance to the novel’s writer, Ian Fleming, as the place where he lived much of his life after a career in the British Intelligence Agency.

In this new age rendition, Bond spares no remorse for his less than tactical killings which involve villains being stabbed, thrown from buildings, flung from motorcycles as well as other incidents that seem appropriate for X-Box video games.

Love interests as they must, ensue in any Bond tale particularly since this film’s premise centers around the story of a mournful Bond seeking revenge in the death of this former lover Vesper Lynd, that occurred in Casino Royal(2006). Her prior involvement in a secret organization is the trail that the Bond of “Quantum of Solace” must follow to find answers. Along the way is where his encounters exhibit violence, only to discover the group’s head in command is led by an unmistakable fem fatale named Dominique Greene(Mathieu Amsiric). Her illicit business deals involve siphoning off funds from third world countries which leads our hero to jet set to the locations of Siena, Bolivia, London, Haiti and Austria.

His faithful operations sergeant back home, M., makes his place known in this film mainly be sequestering Bond of his duties for the sake of preserving 007's sanity. Any dramatic love affair is lacking though except for a short lived companionship with a beauteous armed accomplice named Camille, played by Olga Kurylenko(the striking female farthest to the left on this website’s home page). Not only for her stunning good looks and a glimpse into some of the action mentioned above makes this film worth seeing.

The sequenced theme to this movie's prequel, Casino Royal makes for an engaging tale that recalls other similarities of Daniel Craig’s previous role such as the reappearance of his male action assistant Mathis. Quantum of Solace isn’t on par with the Bond films of previous eras but is sure to excite and offers an insightful background of the story before going to see the new release "Sky Fall".
