McConaughey on a Production Budget is Worth It

Taking cues from Mark Twain’s eponymous tale ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’, a new film called ‘Mud’ embarks upon the story of recent life experiences from the middle aged seclusionist played by Matthew McConaughey. The actor dons the self titled name as he lives on a humble retreat in Podunk, Arkansas. Despite never revealing in a full explanation, the title character is escaping from something greater than just a larger life beyond the simple existence that he’s come to find complacent.

The redeeming benefit which the character possess in being removed from the greater outside world though is a love that he shares with his equally simple wife Juniper, played by Reece Witherspoon. Perhaps nearly just as gratifying to Mud is the adornment received by the young adolescents who often associate themselves with the dwelling enigmatic figures. Despite their previous misgivings from the lived before arriving to the simple life, Mud and Juniper radiate a wisdom which these otherwise uninspired young boys can confide it. Particularly it is the meaning of truth and exuberance of personal connections that Mud, as the young boy’s emblematic guide, seems to manifest.

This movie is the third by director Jeff Nichols whose previous works include ‘Shotgun Stories’ and ‘Take Shelter.’ Both involve tales of simplicity that transcend the seemingly mundane into something more poignant. His new work is an independent film that has been given positive remarks for a well-rounded production on a rather low end budget.
