Beyond the Hills
A long movie that chronicles an unusual reunion between two childhood friends who have since grown and discovered uniquely separate lives for themselves. Set in a small Romanian town among hillsides and centuries old buildings, Volchita has made herself complacently adherent to the strictures of a convent where she practices as a nun. The simple characteristics and obedience that such a passive existence entails is initially brought to the viewer's attention. But things become quickly become a bit more involved . Reuniting with Volchita is Aline, who had years before left the area near where the two had grown having spent the vast many years of her adult life in Germany. Alina for reasons not fully understood, has make her return and takes refuge under the not so desirable circumstances of a nunnery through the assistance of Volchita. In the interests of rekindling the friendship and setting some kind of new existence for herself in a temporary stay there, Alina finds her lifestyle habits in conflict with the standard of her surroundings. Alina who given the rashness of such a decision for relocation seems helpless in turning to any other option for herself. Several circumstances bring her at odds with the leaders at the convent and a punishment against her is ordered. Having to cope with the not so lenient detention, a personal awakening unfolds for Alina that doesn't necessarily reflect the secular cleansing that had been intended by the overseeing convent directors. The story attempts to bring about the idea of what purpose such solitary servitude offers for those having made such a decision to become part of the religious hierarchy. The moral quandary of a celibate, pious life for such a woman who is made to follow the daily fulfilment of staunch religiousness is questioned as whether such a place still carries an importance in society as it had for centuries throughout history. The film is in Romanian with English Subtitles.
